Summary - According to Merriam Webster's is “a brief statement that gives the most important information about something”.
From the most basic point of view, that is kind of what a round summary should be,e but with the addition of a lot of things.
Before starting on any of this, keep in mind that the summary speech is one of the most important speeches for the round; it either makes or breaks the ballot for your side. Not only that, but it should also contain EVERYTHING that is going to be said in final focus.
Think of it this way: would you win the round if your partner in final focus did nothing but take exactly what you said, remove a couple of words, and say it in his final focus?
Summary structure:
Your constructive summary → also pls collapse IT WILL MAKE UR LIFE EASIER
Their key arguments against your constructive (Pick one or two)
Rebut against those key arguments, either with logic or evidence (depends on judge)
WEIGH BEFORE YOU GO TO THEIR CASE (use weighing mechanisms pls)
Their Case
Your key arguments that completely dismantle them
WEIGH AGAIN → judges forget
End with a punchline that stays → some profound words that stick → have these ready beforehand.
This could be a pre-written condensed constructive summary or something you do on the spot.t
COLLAPSE: Yes, it is hard to collapse and let go of one of the arguments you have been fighting for in the round, though it will do you most good and make the best use of your time fighting for your side. Pick the contention with the most ground and the most believable link chains and weak responses from the other team; if it's a tech round, though, go specifically for the weak responses as well as the greatest impact. In general, go for the strongest contention that is best explained, and you can rebut their responses on. ALSO: IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE YOU LOST THE CONTENTION, and if you are worried about that, you can start with: In the best interest of time, we will be focusing on our most important contention….
Summarize that contention: By summarize, I do NOT mean read your taglines word for word or start reading your entire constructive top to bottom for that contention. I mean that your strongest link chains and connections with the most important piece and say those together. For instance, saying: Illegal sports betting arises due to constricting laws and regulations as backed by Meghan ‘24; The easiest way for me to do it is by picking up my flow and literally just taking 1 contention I wrote stuff about and making that comprehensible for my judge to understand, but it is totally understandable if you want to prewrite this or go about this a different way.
Attack turns first: When reaching into high-level debate, attacking their turns is key to winning because in the scope of the back half of the round those turns have significant meaning as they are usually what your opponents could use during FF to home in their ballot, so attack those first and spend the longest amount of time on those.
(MAJOR) Evidence vs Evidence battles for link chain: A lot of the times your opponent will come up with stuff that say the EXACT opposite of what you have and then it turns into a evidence vs evidence battle, which a lot of people try to fight with: My evidence is newer therefore I win, which might work in front of tech of flay judges though it will never be good enough to defend that argument if your entire link chain depends on that. So the best way to deal with this is by logicing your way through exactly WHY YOUR EVIDENCE FINDS WHAT IT FINDS; for instance, if I say that: “Meghan ‘24 finds that house prices have been decreasing over the last couple of years” and my opponent has stated: “Stuart ‘25 finds that house prices have actually been increasing over the past years…”. Being realistic a lot of the times this type of discrepancy can be resolved by looking at what the research finds to be “INCREASING PRICES”, but a lot of the times you won’t have the kind of time to find this evidence so instead you can logic your way through to win YOUR EVIDENCE: “Both of our evidences contradict on the point of housing prices over the past year so evidence has become a holistic argument, instead look to the real world, post 2021, housing prices skyrocketed with no sign of stopping due to supply shortages, however as we have come out of the covid era, prices BY BASIC economics are going to show a downward trend as these supply routes and supply shortages are once again fulfilled; Temporary shortages create permanent headlines, not permanent prices “. Another thing, the punchline at the end is something I usually like to prewrite for most of my evidence/points of argument to appeal to lay judges as well as flay.
Normal argument clash w/ evidence if 1st summary or w/ logic if second; this is kind of just basic debating tactics and treat it like a rebuttal but with only a couple of key arguments.Y OU DON” T HAVE TO ATTACK ALL ARGUMENTS, only the key ones; for instanc,e if they argue that; your study is from 2008 therefore its invalid, DON” T SPEND TOO MUCH TIME ON IT, ONLY IF YOU BELIEVE YOU HAVE TIME FOR IT
I think that we already have guides on how to weigh, so I'm not really going to be teaching that, BUT rather the importance of weighing and where it is most effective. Just weighing in the last 10 seconds of your speech has NO impact on the judge, but rather weighing before you even move on by saying: Even before we move on to their case, our impact of saving over 100 million lives is far greater than any number they have given in this round.
Metaweighing: For weighing you should do it twice, once on your case and once on their case, though for metaweighing you should do it only once, and it should when you are on their case, because you list out their weighing mechanism and their impact and then weigh, BUT ALSO EXPLAIN EXACTLY WHY YOUR WEIGHING MECHANISM OF SCOPE OR MAGNITUDE IS BEST FOR THIS WORLD → also if collapsing on scope pls have some sort of evidence backed up saying scope impact → MOST important.
Going through case and rebuttals at the same time: When on your case, it was: summarize key points and constructive → rebut their main points against your case; though foropponents's case you want to minimize re-explaining their point (It gives more speaking time to their arguments), instead you want to read theilink/argumentnt → SAY your MAIN RESPONSE to it. It may seem tempting to just straight up extend the response from rebuttal that they didn’t respond to, but MAKE SURE THAT IT IS A STRONG ONE. Even if they went against your strong argument against their case, IT SHOULD STILL BE BROUGHT UP AND ATTACKED, as it is probably the most believable.
Their argument/constructive point → EXACTLY WHY IT'S BONKERS (pick the main ones) → Their link /next constructive point → EXACTLY WHY IT'S BONKERS
You need to weigh again after going through their case, with something like this: Even if you buy everything on their case, their impacts are still a drop in the bucket compared to 100 million lives saved. Also, if they have already weighed, PLEASE METAWEIGH; it will save you in case they go for probability because the judge will be stuck on weighing mechanisms and you give way for a loss.
End on something the judge can stick to: A lot of times this is extremely hard to come up with on the spot, so I usually come up with these during prep. It should be your case vs most common arguments; for instance, if your case was about the black market for sports betting and its effects and their case was about regulations on sports betting, then youcould sayy something like: Demand doesn't disappear with regulation—it simply changes addresses. Prohibition doesn't erase demand—it changes the dealer. The less accessible the legal market, the more attractive the illegal one. → My point is making it memorable because the more memorable your ending is the higher the better chance you have with lay and flay judges.
