Red Folder Editor-in-Chief
Ian Cheng is a junior at the Bronx High School of Science in New York, where he serves as Novice Director for the team's Speech/Extemp squad and competes in Extemporaneous Speaking and Impromptu.
He joined Equality in Forensics in the winter of his sophomore year as a general reporter for the Red Folder. In June 2025, Ian was promoted to News Editor, where he monitored, edited, and formatted breaking news submissions. He has orchestrated many of the Red Folder's writer accountability measures and contributed to the launch of the publication's new WordPress website in March 2026. During his tenure, Ad Fontes rated the Red Folder as more reliable than the Washington Post and less biased than NPR and the Wall Street Journal. Ian has also supported other Equality in Forensics programs, such as the NSDA question packet.
As Editor-in-Chief, Ian leads the Red Folder as a whole, handling logistics and managing a team of 50+ writers to create informative and digestible news briefings. He also works closely with the four other editors on new initiatives aimed toward improving the publication's reliability and outreach.
