It’s easy to logically reason that being in speech and debate would help tremendously with skills outside of tournaments, but it’s an entirely different thing to actually experience it. No matter the class, I constantly find myself using the various skills that speech and debate provides, specifically in the realm of critical thinking. This extracurricular is a vital asset for navigating the complexities of the modern world, especially in the growing age of artificial intelligence. 

For the average high schooler, life is a whirlwind of classes, homework, social pressures, and extracurricular commitments. Most students are all working towards the same goal: college. In this demanding environment, the ability to think critically is not just an advantage–it's a necessity. Critical thinking empowers students to dissect information, evaluate arguments, and form reasoned judgments–skills that are directly honed through participation in speech and debate. Unlike traditional classroom settings, where information is often passively received, speech and debate demands active engagement in order for there to be an actual competition. In debate, students must research topics, construct arguments, anticipate counterarguments, and articulate their positions persuasively. This rigorous process cultivates a mindset of inquiry and analysis, enabling students to approach challenges with a discerning eye that your average high school student simply won’t possess. 

In a more specific instance of this, we can look at classes where the critical thinking skills offered by speech and debate are directly utilized. In English, you need to analyze different works, argue a stance, and cross-apply that knowledge to writing. In History, you utilize what you’re learning about the past and make it applicable to the modern world. In Math, you use various problem-solving strategies in order to tackle a question presented to you. In science, you have to carefully plan experiments, analyze data collected, and draw conclusions based off of research. While only core classes were presented, critical thinking in schools is incredibly prevalent. 

The benefits of critical thinking extend far beyond the classroom. In an era defined by information overload and the spread of misinformation, the ability to distinguish fact from fiction is undoubtedly vital. Speech and debate equips students with the tools to evaluate sources, identify biases, and assess the validity of claims–skills that are essential for responsible citizenship and informed decision-making.
